Cleopatra the seventh Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra the seventh was the first one who choose this beautiful island laying at the eastern side of the Mediterranean coast of Egypt (Alexandrian Sea Coast). Khedive Abbas Helmy This area was isolated till Khedive Abbas Helmy came and revealed the hidden beauty of this area with its enchaining combination of non-monotonous typographic variations of gulfs, rocky coasts, sandy beaches, hills and slopes in approximately 325 feddans. He entrusted his engineers with the planning and implementing of boulevards promenades and green areas. An Austrian engineer built for him the Salamlek Palace on a hill overlooking a wide panorama of the area. He also built the Haramlek Palace for his wives and servants. A unique bridge was erected to annex the island to the sandy beach; also a Greek style kiosk was built to match the historic background of the island. Montaza (recreation place) was the favorite place for Khedive Abbas till he left Egypt forever. King Fouad first The place was negligence and misuse till Sultan Fouad was put to the throne, he started to restoration and redecoration of what has been destructed and ruined during the First World War. After he turned to be a King he sent to Europe for engineers, architects, landscaping experts and maritime engineers who have fulfilled the task by 1928, and a new department was founded under the name of [Royal Palaces Engineering Department] headed by the Italian engineer [Feroche bey]. Many remodelings, additions, renovations and construction was handled by this department allover the Montaza including the Salamlek and the Haramlek, the latter was remodeled in the fascination Byzantine style, while the first includes a combination of various European architectural styles. Also there is the clock tower, which imitates the famous clock towers in the world's greatest capitals. King Farouk first He added his personal touches to the area and built another bridge to annex the island to the gardens. July Revolution After the 23rd revolution the area became a state property and the following works were built: 1- Preparing the beaches to receive both domestic and foreign tourists. 2- Construction of de Lux cabanas along the seashore divided into 9 beaches. 3- Preparing courts and playgrounds for Tennis, Crocket, Golf, Pawling, Table tennis, aquatic sports… etc. 4- Converting the Salamlek into a Hotel. 5- Converting one of the two piers into a yachting pier.
